Altium Packaging Optimizes Spend via Azure Migration

Problem

Altium Packaging designs high performance packaged solutions for beverage and consumer industrial products. With a diverse bottle portfolio and innovative design team, Altium Packaging is among the leading plastic container suppliers in the world. Despite their high-tech packaging capabilities, they lacked efficiency in storing and managing their data. Altium had an upcoming data center renewal, expiring network contracts, and end of life hardware. In addition, their current datacenter had little room for growth and was unable to meet future business requirements.

Solution

Altium Packaging completed an Azure Foundations Assessment sponsored by Microsoft. This assessment helped Altium Packaging to gain a holistic view of the costs and paths to migrate workloads into Azure. They completed an Azure Migration Planning and Design and Initial Setup engagement to move existing IT Infrastructure into Microsoft Azure. BDO Digital provided a roadmap for Altium Packaging to fully migrate their systems into an Azure based framework.

Altium Packaging used Azure Site Recovery to migrate 170 servers from their datacenter to Azure. BDO Digital delivered a successful migration and continues to monitor and optimize the Altium Packaging environment.

Result

BDO Digital was able to migrate Altium Packaging systems to Azure in three months. As a result of this migration, Altium Packaging expects to see the following benefits:

  • Avoidance of several hundred thousand dollars in capital expenditures during the present quarter
  • Elimination of datacenter contract expense
  • Refocus valuable IT resources from "Keep the Lights On" activities to enabling business objectives
  • Enhancement of disaster recovery posture
  • Better scalability and flexibility to meet future business needs
