BDO Digital Explains Microsoft's New Feature - Virtual Machine Serial Console
March 28, 2018
The Virtual Machine Serial Console is a new feature in Microsoft that delivers direct serial access to cloud VMs. This new feature is in direct response to consistent requests by Microsoft's customers for an easier way to troubleshoot Azure cloud instances through direct serial access. The decision was most likely also driven by the large number of Azure users running Linux. The feature is available in all Azure regions and accessible through Azure portal.
BDO Digital's Ric Opal weighs in on Microsoft's decision to introduce this new feature, highlighting the importance of listening to the market. The Virtual Machine Serial Console is yet another way Microsoft has embraced the open source community.
Azure is not a Windows Server thing. Azure is an open place that allows for choice, collaboration, and innovation that crosses platforms.

Opal goes on to compare the experience of using the feature to connecting to a physical machine through a traditional serial port.
It's like plugging into a cable to COM1 virtually and getting a text interface. It delivers the type of control they currently have by being able to stroll into their data center and at least believe they can have an impact on diagnosing an issue or speeding along an outcome.
